About Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration
History and Background
About Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, Kolkata Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration stands at 210, Bepin Behari Ganguly Street, close to the Bowbazar and College Street crossing in central Kolkata. It teaches only commerce, and its roots go back further than most colleges in the city. In 1903 the Government of Bengal started a two-year course in commercial studies at Presidency College. By 1905 this had grown into a separate Commercial Institute. The classes then moved several times around Bowbazar as enrolment grew and new subjects such as banking were added. The institution reached its present building in 1951, taking over premises earlier used by the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, with support from the Goenka family. It then took the name it carries today. The college began teaching commerce before the University of Calcutta had its own commerce stream. In 1930 the university recognised the college's final examination as equivalent to its own. Today the college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and recognised by UGC under Sections 2(f) and 12(B). It is co-educational and runs a full day college. An evening section was added after 1965. Its courses are: B.Com under the University of Calcutta M.Com, with standalone admission notified by the college Undergraduate seats are filled through the decentralised admission process of the University of Calcutta, with merit lists, verification phases and circulars published on the college website. For students who want a B.Com from a college that has done nothing but commerce for over a century, Goenka College is a long-standing name in the College Street area.
