About Faculty of Fine Arts - Jamia Millia Islamia
History and Background
About Faculty of Fine Arts - Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi The Faculty of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi, began in 1951 as an Art Institute whose foundation was laid by Abul Kalam. The idea was to make art training part of education for citizens of newly independent India, using modern methods while drawing on both Indian and Western traditions. In 1967 the institute became the Department of Art and Craft, and on 3 December 2007 it was declared a full Faculty of the university. The Faculty now has six departments: Applied Art Painting Sculpture Graphic Art Art Education Art History and Art Appreciation Between them, these departments teach undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes. The Art Education department runs a master's degree in Art Education that the university describes as the first and only one in the country. More than 450 students study in the Faculty at any time. Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university, so admission to the Faculty follows the university's own admission schedule and process for each programme. Teachers here try to combine traditional media and historical fine arts practice with newer technologies, and the Faculty takes an interdisciplinary approach with a clear interest in contemporary art.
