About Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute University (MGRDU), Chennai Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute is a deemed-to-be university. Its main campus is on E.V.R. Periyar Salai (NH4) at Maduravoyal, on Chennai's western side. Its roots go back to the Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust. The trust was formed in 1985 and opened Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College that same year. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College followed in 1988, and Thai Moogambigai Dental College in 1991. In 2003 the UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development gave the engineering and dental colleges deemed-university status together, under the current name. The university has since added medical colleges as constituent units. These are A.C.S. Medical College and Hospital and Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital in Chennai, and RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital in Bengaluru. The medical and dental colleges run under statutory regulator approvals. The university now teaches engineering, medicine, dentistry, paramedical and allied health sciences, architecture, law, management and humanities. Programmes include: B.Tech in Computer Science, IT, ECE, EEE, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electronics and Instrumentation, and Industrial and Production Engineering M.Tech in fields such as Computer Science, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management MBBS and BDS B.Arch and B.Des MBBS and BDS seats need a NEET score and are filled through deemed-university counselling. B.Arch admission needs NATA. M.Tech applicants can use GATE or TANCET scores. B.Tech admission goes through the university's own process.
