History and Background
About Dr BR Ambedkar Law College, Tirupathi Dr. Ambedkar Law College in Tirupati started in 1991 and now goes by the name Dr. Ambedkar Global Law Institute. It is run by the Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Educational Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act. The founder-correspondent, Sri R. Thippa Reddy, set it up with the idea that people should know the law of the land and that legal education should be open to students from any background. Dr A. Saradamma, a medical doctor, serves as president of the college. The institute is affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, and has more than 2,000 students on its rolls. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate law degrees: LLB (three years), including an honours version BA LLB (Honours) and B.Com LLB, both five-year integrated courses LLM (two years) in Constitution and Legal Order, and in Criminal Law Admissions follow the terms set by the LAWCET convener at SV University. For the three-year LLB, applicants need a degree with at least 45 percent marks, and for the five-year courses, an intermediate or 10+2 pass with 45 percent. SC and ST candidates get a 5 percent relaxation. A candidate with 45 percent or more in a B.Ed. or another postgraduate course can apply for the LLB even with a lower degree score. The college also says it considers LSAT India scores in selection for its LLB courses. Apart from the degree courses, the institute runs coaching for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for students aiming at national law schools, and preparation classes for the junior civil judge qualifying examination. According to the college, its graduates now work as jurists, judges, advocates and lawmakers in India and abroad.
