About Doon University
History and Background
About Doon University, Dehradun Doon University is a state university of Uttarakhand, on Mothrowala Road at Kedarpur in Dehradun, near the Shivalik foothills. It was created by the Doon University Act, 2005 (Uttaranchal Adhiniyam Sankhya 18 of 2005), which the Governor signed on 23 April 2005. Its statutes were approved on 9 May 2009, and the first academic session began on 6 August 2009. Unlike many state universities, Doon is unitary and residential. It does not affiliate colleges and teaches all its students on its own campus at the edge of the city. The UGC recognises it under Section 12(B), and NAAC has accredited it with an A grade. The state set it up to fill a gap in higher education in Uttarakhand and to teach subjects with a clear link to the region, such as environment and natural resources. Courses run at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level across these schools: School of Environment and Natural Resources School of Management School of Media and Communication Studies School of Social Sciences School of Languages, with Chinese, Spanish and German studies School of Physical Sciences and School of Biological Sciences School of Technology and School of Design The Departments of Chinese, Spanish and German Studies were set up together in 2010 under the School of Languages. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses follows the process the university notifies each year, and Ph.D. admissions are announced separately for each session. The university also hosts national seminars, including recent ones on the Himalaya and climate change.
