History and Background
About Department of Law, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur The Post Graduate Teaching Department of Law at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) was set up in 1963, during the Third Five Year Plan, on the recommendation of the UGC. It now sits under the university's Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies. RTMNU itself dates from 1 August 1923, when the Central Provinces government created it by notification, and it is now a state university governed by the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. The department concentrates on postgraduate legal education. Its two-year LL.M. is split into four semesters, each ending with a university exam, and the syllabus was rebuilt in line with the National Education Policy 2020 to make it more skill-based. Students choose one of four specialisation groups, each with 25 seats: Constitutional Law and Administrative Law Intellectual Property Laws Business Law Criminal Law Every semester combines common compulsory papers, specialisation papers and an elective. One paper is built around research skills, and later semesters include a socio-legal research project, a seminar, law teaching practice and a dissertation, all supervised through a mentor–mentee scheme. Each paper carries 100 marks, with 40 for internal assessment through tests, assignments, case reviews, presentations, conference participation and legal literacy campaigns, and 60 for the written exam. Students can also take value-added certificate courses outside regular hours. Research has a long history here. The university's Ph.D. ordinance for law took effect from the 1973–74 session, and the department publishes the RTMNU Law Journal. Facilities include a computer lab with internet access, a departmental library and classrooms with projection equipment. Admission notices for the LL.M. are released by the university each year, and the department also lists placement information for its students.
