About Department of Law Burdwan University
History and Background
About Department of Law, Burdwan University, Burdwan The Department of Law is one of the postgraduate teaching departments of the University of Burdwan and works from the university's academic campus at Golapbag, Bardhaman. The university itself opened on 15 June 1960, with Sukumar Sen as its first vice-chancellor. It was built largely on property left to the state by Uday Chand Mahtab, the last head of the Burdwan Raj, with support from Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy, and its administration still runs from the old Rajbati palace. The department teaches three programmes: LL.B. (three years) for graduates, with 60 day-time seats at the department LL.M. (two years) Ph.D. in Law, after a one-semester coursework programme Admission is through the university's own written tests rather than a national entrance exam. For the LL.B., applicants need at least 45 percent in a bachelor's degree under the 10+2+3 pattern, with a 5 percent relaxation for SC and ST candidates and no upper age limit. The 100-mark test covers English and general knowledge, and seats are reserved as per Bar Council of India rules. LL.B. admissions usually take place in October and November. The LL.M. is open to three-year law graduates with at least 50 percent aggregate and is also decided by a written test, with admission in June and July. Both degree courses now follow a CBCS syllabus introduced in 2024–25. The faculty includes a professor and several assistant professors, most with doctoral degrees in law or allied subjects. Students can use the university central library, health centre and placement and student welfare office at Golapbag. The University of Burdwan has been accredited by NAAC with a B++ grade (CGPA 2.91) in 2025, a result the university notes is still under review. The town is a little under 100 km north-west of Kolkata on the Grand Trunk Road.
