Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology sits on GST Road at Vandalur, on the southern edge of Chennai close to Tambaram. It started out as an engineering college in 1984 and was declared a deemed-to-be university on 16 December 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The institute holds NAAC accreditation with an A+ grade. Teaching is organised into schools, each grouping a few departments. They include infrastructure, mechanical sciences, electrical and communication sciences, computer, information and mathematical sciences, physical and chemical sciences, and social sciences and humanities, along with architecture, pharmacy and management. Programmes run at undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. levels, and the institute also offers MBA, MCA and BA Islamic Studies in online and distance mode. For B.Tech, Crescent holds its own entrance test, the Crescent Institute Engineering Admission Test (CIEAT), in several Indian cities around the last week of April. Candidates with a valid JEE Main score are exempted from CIEAT, and selection depends on the test or JEE score together with Class 12 marks, followed by counselling. B.Arch admission depends on the NATA score and Class 12 marks, and lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech is available for diploma holders. Crescent describes itself as research-intensive. It runs a central instrumentation facility (CSIF) and research centres attached to the schools, and B.Tech students can add a minor degree in another area.
