About BJ Medical College (BJMC)

History and Background

About BJ Medical College (BJMC), Ahmedabad B. J. Medical College started life in 1871 as the Ahmedabad Medical School, with 14 students training as hospital assistants at the Civil Hospital. A donation of Rs. 20,000 from Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy in 1879 gave the school its present name. It is the oldest medical college in Gujarat and today works as a government institution under the state's Department of Health and Family Welfare. Affiliation moved over the years from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay to Bombay University, and since 1951 the undergraduate course has been under Gujarat University, with postgraduate courses following in 1956. The college shares a campus of more than 100 acres in Asarwa with the New Civil Hospital, and the whole complex is now known as Medicity. Institutions on the campus include the M. & J. Institute of Ophthalmology and the Government Spine Institute. BJMC Ahmedabad admits 250 students to MBBS every year through NEET-UG. Its postgraduate side is large: MBBS with 250 seats MD and MS in 24 branches, with an annual intake of over 400 Super speciality courses in 11 branches PG seats are filled through NEET-PG counselling. The college is a recognised centre of the National Board of Examinations and has research links with ICMR. A regional pharmacovigilance training centre has worked from its Pharmacology department since 2005, and NACO set up an ART centre and a model blood bank here in 2008 and 2009.
