About Annamalai University
History and Background
Annamalai University was founded by Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar and came into existence on 1 January 1929. The university about page says it was the first university founded by a private philanthropist. Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College at Chidambaram were handed over for the university. The main campus is Annamalainagar 608002, just east of Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, not Chennai. The page describes a campus of about 1,000 acres. The Annamalai University Act, 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013) came into force on 25 September 2013. The university stayed unitary until 2021 and then became affiliating, with jurisdiction over Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villuppuram and Kallakurichi and 81 affiliated colleges. NAAC accredited it A+ in the fourth cycle in 2022. Distance programmes are approved by the Distance Education Bureau. NIRF 2025 ranked Annamalai University 42nd in pharmacy, with a score of 54.68, and gave the city as Annamalainagar. The website is annamalaiuniversity.ac.in. The city on this record is Chidambaram.
