About Andhra Medical College (AMC)
History and Background
Andhra Medical College (AMC) is a government medical college in Visakhapatnam, next to King George Hospital. The college website, amc.edu.in, traces medical teaching in the city to 1902, when the Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medical School was set up in the Old Post Office area with support from Maharajah Sir Goday Narayana Gajapathi Rao and Maharani Lady Goday Chitti Janakiammah. The school later became Medical College, Vizagapatnam. It started operations on 1 July 1923 with 32 students. Captain Frederick Jasper Anderson, IMS, opened it informally on 7 July 1923 as officiating principal. It was formally opened on 19 July 1923 by Diwan Bahadur Rajah Panuganti Ramarayaningar, then minister for local self-government.
