History and Background
About Amrita Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kochi The Amrita Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, now called the Amrita School of Pharmacy, is part of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and sits on the university's health sciences campus in Kochi, Kerala. It was the first school to start functioning on that campus. The 130-acre site also holds the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) hospital and the schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing and allied health, plus a centre for nanosciences. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a multi-campus deemed university founded by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, who is also its chancellor. NAAC awarded the university an A++ grade in 2023, and it was placed seventh among universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings. Pharmacy degrees from the Kochi school are awarded by the university. The school runs programmes at every level of pharmacy education: B.Pharm and the six-year Pharm.D Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) for B.Pharm graduates M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences Being next to a large multispeciality hospital shapes much of the training here. Pharm.D students get their clinical exposure at the AIMS hospital, and former students mention publishing research based on that work during the course. The school has also taken part in international projects, such as PREVENT IT, an Erasmus+ capacity-building project from 2019 to 2021 on antibiotic resistance and prevention, and it hosted the International Conference on Chitin and Chitosan in 2026. Graduates have gone on to work as hospital pharmacists, drug safety specialists and researchers in India and abroad, including in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Admissions are run by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham through its central admissions process for each programme.
